Chemical Relaxers: What Are They?
Chemical hair relaxers or hair straighteners are products that loosen the bonds between hair. They are used to straighten thick, naturally curly hair. They can also be used to make hair look thicker.
Hair relaxers come in a variety of forms. Chemical relaxers, which include compounds like sodium hydroxide or lye, are among the most popular. These components increase the thickness of your hair, allowing the relaxer's chemicals to get deeper into the hair shaft and dissolve the bonds there.
Chemical Hair Relaxer Lawsuit
The FDA announced new regulations in 2014 mandating manufacturers of hair relaxers to list the ingredients in their products. Unfortunately, a lot of corporations ignored these regulations. Due to this, several large manufacturers of hair care products, including L'Oreal, Schwarzkopf, and Pantene, were held liable by hundreds of women who used hair relaxers.
In these hair relaxer lawsuits, the lawsuit alleges that despite knowing that using formaldehyde was risky, the corporations continued to sell products containing it. These businesses need to be responsible for any harm brought on by their products.
To prevent these harmful consequences, hair products must follow to the strict safety standards required of cosmetics. Customers should trust that the hair products they purchase will not endanger their health and be safe to use. But these and other potentially cancer-causing chemicals could serve as the basis for a chemical hair relaxer lawsuit to recover damages.

Chemicals Hair Relaxers & the Risk of Cancer
Women who use chemical hair straighteners/relaxers have a risk of uterine cancer that is more than twice as high, according to a recent study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States.
Additionally, despite the fact that certain hair straighteners have names that sound organic, like "Crème of Nature®," the NIH study discovered potential carcinogens in the products.
Chemicals discovered in hair straightener studies included:
- Bisphenol A (BPA, a chemical linked to serious health problems)
- Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDS) such as parabens and phthalates, which are carcinogenic
- Formaldehyde (a suspected cancer-causing chemical)
- Metals
Researchers are still investigating the precise mechanism by which harmful ingredients found in hair straightening products, which cause cancer.
Lesions and burns on the scalp may develop from using hair relaxers or straighteners. EDCs and other harmful chemicals in the straighteners are thought to enter the body more easily as a result of these wounds, according to recent research.
There is a higher danger of scalp burns and exposure to these potentially cancer-causing chemicals if hair straightening treatments are used frequently.
According to research published in 2021 from Boston University, women who used lye-containing hair products at least seven times over a period of fifteen years had a 30% increased risk of developing breast cancer. Boston University conducted a 25-year study of 59,000 women in an effort to pinpoint breast cancer risk factors.
Frequent Users Have the Greatest Risk of Cancer
Researchers discovered that the risk of uterine cancer increased about 2.5 times, from 1.64% to 4.05% of women, among those who used chemical hair straighteners or relaxers at least four times year.

Do Hair Straightening Product Manufacturers Know Their Product Causes Cancer?
It appears that a number of hair relaxer manufacturers were selling their products while knowing they included cancer-causing chemicals. For example, evidence indicate that L'Oréal was informed of the harmful implications of the chemicals used in the brand's hair straightening products as early as 2015. However, under existing FDA regulations, L’Oréal was not required to obtain prior approval before releasing the products to market. Additionally, manufacturers of hair products are not required to declare each chemical individually; instead, they can group all of the chemicals together under the heading’s "fragrance" or "perfume" ingredients. As a result, businesses frequently group together potentially dangerous substances under these seemingly innocent ingredients.
As a result, consumers who bought hair straightening products were unaware that the product contained a potentially cancer-causing ingredient. However, these manufacturers appear to have been aware that the hazardous chemicals present in their products could result in serious health problems. According to a woman who recently filed a hair relaxer lawsuit, she states that L'Oréal "actively and willfully hid and/or suppressed material facts, in whole or in part, to urge consumers... to purchase and use the Products."
